She looked and gave him a once-over. He was sporting a sort of skater chiq look. She didn't think it was intentional, but it worked. And to be fair, his face was as cute as ever.
"Thank you," she said at his compliment, smiling and sticking one of her hands in her pocket. "Not really all that long, just a couple minutes. Finished up with my thing early, so I figured I'd just head over. Are you gonna order something?" she asked, loosely pointing to the counter. She was enjoying the look on his face as he tried to pretend he didn't keep glancing at her.

Did she even TRY to be so pretty??? He doubted it. Wait, he looked at her again, no. He glanced away at the counter, and the girl he previously thought had pretty blue eyes paled in comparison. SKYLAR'S. EYES. WOW.
He mentally added up how much he had on him and shook his head. He needed to be careful with how he spent if he wanted to pay for everything. He was running on tips alone this week.
"Nah, I'm good," he said after a minute before looking over at her (he was actually talking to her this time, okay?? Normal people looked at who they were talking to). "Unless you're thinking about staying here longer before we head out. You hungry?"
Good, good. Keep it cool. Don't get distracted in the JOLLY RANCHER BLUE OF HER EYES.

Skylar: She tilted her head a little.
"Okay," she said. She hoped he wasn't the kind of guy who thought Starbucks was pretentious.
"Lara?" the boy behind the counter called out, "Lara..." she could see him roll his eyes. "Croft?" Skylar walked over and retrieved her drink with a grin. She made her way to a table, making sure Conrad was following. At his question she laughed a little, self-consciously. "I'm always hungry," she said in a joking tone. It was kind of true. She had the kind of metabolism that other girls gave her killing glares for. She wanted to say it was a curse, but when her dad was as affluential as hers was, and her body processed food the way hers did, there was nothing keeping her from munching on delicious snacks all day. It wasn't like she couldn't gain weight, but she only had to put in minimal effort. She didn't want to be seen as high maintenance or a glutton, though.
She took a seat, quickly crossing her legs and taking a small sip of the still too hot drink.
"So, what do you want to talk about?" she asked. They'd already talked so often, they'd burned through most of the first date conversations.

Conrad grinned as he sat down, smoothing his hair nervously. He was suddenly hyper-aware of his every limb and felt like he was jutting out weirdly at every angle, even though common sense told him he absolutely was not. He had prepared for that question, though!
As non-chalantly as possible, he glanced at a post-it note in his pocket under the table. He tried to play it off as he looked back up at her and did his best to smile a little!! "How about, I don't know," (He DID know), "What's your favorite place in the world?" He was probably walking into her talking about Spain or something while he'd just talk about Puerto Rico. But whatever. Thank you, eHarmony.com for your first date icebreakers.

Skylar: "Hmmmmmmmmmm," she swirled her drink a little, thinking. She noticed he was glancing suspiciously down. Did he write notes on his palm? Omg. "Wellll, probably Jamaica!!!! Ugh, the beaches are freaking gorgeous and I love the water over there, I think it's even better than Hawaii's. And the resorts there are amazing and have the best benefit packages and I love the fruit therrreeeeeee~~~. And the SURFING! SO MUCH BETTER THAN L.A.'s!!! Oh have you ever been parasailing? ? It's amazing!!" She realized she was gushing a bit and drank some of her coffee, looking off to the side. "So... how about you?"

As much as Conrad had thought he'd been mentally prepared, he really was not prepared for that level of travel. Did normal people just have money to travel like that? Or was she just... secretly rich? Was he poorer than he thought or was she a millionaire? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? "A-ah, uh," he scratched the back of his neck. "No, I can't say I have been parasailing. Sounds like fun though! I think my favorite is probably Puerto Rico. The sky at night is just... It's not black, it's just... blue. The darkest and yet brightest blue you've ever seen. And the stars just litter the sky! Like, the Milky Way, but the entire sky. I used to climb up to the roof just to get a better look at night." He fidgeted a bit and took a quick peek at his list before staring over at the counter for a second, trying to play off the look down. "But yeah, what about, like, who was your favorite teacher or professor or whatever?" Wow, such a lame question. Why did he even write that one down. Too late now, he had to stick with it. He couldn't exactly say 'Oh wait, let me pick another one off of this list I wrote up and stuck in my pocket for when I'm too awkward to say anything because I didn't have enough foresight to know that would be a lame question that sounds scripted,' so he stuck with it. "Mine, well, I didn't go to college, so my favorite teacher was probably this teacher I had in High School- Mr. Maxwell. I only ever understood Science when he taught it. He had a way of explaining- plus, he was super relaxed about assignments as long as he could tell you were trying. I always liked that in a teacher." WOW I'M SO LAME.

Skylar: "Mmm, that sounds amazing," she said, propping her chin on her hand and smiling sweetly. She followed his eyes as he glanced down again. Was he looking at his phone, maybe? Was he texting someone? His new question took her off guard a little. Favorite... teacher? That was an unusual question for a first date. Or... any date.
"Um, well... Okay, I think I know what my favorite class was. It was in college, a science course, and the teacher was one of those real strict types, you know. But I still managed to get away with so much nonsense, because she'd let us get into these big tangential discussions, although I don't think it was necessarily on purpose. I think she just sometimes forgot or gave up or didn't notice when the topic had just imploded and veered off a cliff. Like okay, one day she brought this tiny stray super fluffy gray kitten to class, and it was adorable, and I managed to derail the entire class period getting everybody to vote on a name. Mine won, by the way," she said, trying only to look a tiny bit smug about it.

Conrad: Okay, maybe he totally pulled off asking that dumb question. Besides, now he knew what to talk about!
He laughed, imagining Skylar getting worked up about it. He imagined a national broadcast with her standing behind a mic and banging the podium as an American flag fell down behind her. "That's incredible," he said through laughter. "What did you name it?'

Skylar: She swirled her drink, giving it a twisted grin.
"Mr. Whiskers," she said, looking up to meet his eyes, her own dancing with amusement. "I know, I could have come up with something better. To be fair, he did have surprisingly long whiskers for a kitten." She laughed and drank, then looked out the window, and back to him.
"So," she said with a grin, "Do you have anything planned for us? Or are we gonna wing it?"

Conrad grinned at the name. "No, it's cute. It's hard not to name animals things like that when they're cute enough."
When she'd asked what they were doing though, suddenly he got a little nervous. He decided to do what he did best (other than jumping off of things), play it off with a joke. "Well, first of all, I thought we'd go Dutch." He turned to look at her, face completely blank.
"Okay, I'm totally kidding. We are going pretty casual though," he said, laughing. "I thought I'd give you a choice of a few places to eat and let you pick, if that sounds alright? I can pick instead if you want." He tried to play off a slight, what he hoped was cool-looking half-smile in case she was offended about the going Dutch thing. Like he'd ever make her pay for herself. "After that I have something planned sorta."

Skylar: She didn't react much to his suggestion to go 'Dutch'. She certainly could afford it, and she figured he just didn't have much money, and it was their first date after all. Heck, she'd be more than happy to pay for it! Then he said he was joking and she shrugged it off with a grin. She supposed that in a way she had paid for this date - she highly doubted they would spend more than the tips she'd given him over the course of getting to know each other. Taking another drink, she leaned across the table,
"Sounds good to me! Where were you thinking of eating?"

Conrad scratched his head nervously (not for the first or last time that evening) and cleared his throat to delay a bit.
"I was thinking maybe Pink's, honestly. I had some other back-ups, but they're mostly chains. Is that okay with you, or do you want something else?" Other than her pizza preferences, Conrad honestly had no idea what she liked to eat. Pink's was usually a safe bet, though, what with the reasonably priced hot dogs and famous chili dog in a not-too-much-like-a-shack restaurant that had actually been renovated to be deceivingly nice on the inside. It was very casual, but it also had an upbeat air to it- not only that, it was popular. He hoped she'd be okay with that- he was hoping to show off a little on back roads.

Skylar: "That sounds great!" she said, nodding happily. She finished off her drink (giving herself a whipped cream mustache that she quickly disposed of) and stood up. "So, do you want to go in my car or do you want to drive?" she asked, realizing that maybe they should have planned that out beforehand. Eh, whatever. She headed for the door, chucking her empty cup in the trash as she did. Once outside she took a deep breath and smiled, enjoying the mild weather.

Conrad: Oh, man was he glad that she was okay with Pink's! When she asked who was driving, though, he suddenly remembered that some people didn't like sharing lame scooters with pizza delivery boys. He tried not to sigh.
"I just have my scooter, but if you're okay with that I'm fine with driving! I know a shortcut either way," he said, trying not to sound too eager about her joining him.

Skylar: "Ooh, scooter sounds fun!" she said, "Especially on a day like this!" She spun around once before following him to the little faded blue scooter near the front of the store. He handed her a helmet and she fitted it on securely, even if it did feel like her head was suffocating. And itched. And maybe had spiders in it you don't know they're crafty and hide in small spaces.
Once it was on and spiders were out of her head, she climbed on behind him, sliding her arms around his waist. "Ready to go when you are," she said, maneuvering so she could rest her chin on his shoulder without cracking their helmets together. What a perfect excuse to hug a cute boy.
