Turning as instructed, Rick started humming quietly again as he watched the sunrise out of the corner of his eye. For all the death and destruction they had all experienced today, surprisingly, as he drove the three of them to their new 'home' he felt oddly calm for the first time in a long time. He let out a long, lingering breath, shoulders slumping and the tension gradually leaving his frame. He hadn't realized how wound up he had been until he stretched his neck, first to one side, then the other. It gave off several loud pops. The final one being loud enough a barely-awake Conrad grumbled slightly, shifting in his feet. Rick whispered a quiet apology, laughing slightly under his breath at the tired youngster.
"Kids..." He sighed, his expression changing from a slight smile to a pursed expression as his eyes clouded. He returned to his quiet humming again, a wordless tune that served as a good enough distraction while he kept enough focus on the road.
"Are we dere yet?" He asked Lorna conversationally, after Conrad had definitely fallen asleep.

"No," she said with a sigh. "I wish."
She rested her head on her knees, turned sideways on the seat, with a complete and utter disregard for her seatbelt. "It's going to be a few more hours," she admitted after a while of nothing but Rick's humming in the air. "The kid can take over when you get tired."
They drove in silence for a few more minutes until she directed Rick to a new highway that was thankfully mostly clear. It was probably close to half an hour before she shifted in the backseat and kicked her feet up on the door, looking up at the sky.
"I'd kill for a cigarette," she said finally. "And I have," she added under her breath. She remembered giving Rick her cigarettes- was that really less than 12 hours ago? It felt like a week ago.

With a lot of awkward shifting and grumbling, Rick managed to remove the carton of cigarettes and lighter she had given him earlier. Though he was sure she would have to recognize what he was doing, from the rearview mirror he still couldn't see her having straightened up into a sitting position. He gave the cigarettes a conspiratorial shake, like one might shake the bag of treats for their cat. At her shifting in the backseat, he grinned triumphantly.
"Light me one too, would ya?" He asked as he felt her take them from him, eyes back on the road. If he wasn't concerned about the living dead (and Lorna chastising him) he would've just found a way to light on himself while still driving. But hey, if there was another set of hands to do it, he figured he could ask. Given his track record with her so far, maybe she would decide to keep them for herself now. He kind of really, really hoped she wouldn't do that, though, because as he heard her getting one started for herself in the back, his mouth felt oddly unoccupied and a smoke seemed like the perfect occupant.

Lorna: Probably to the surprise of a Rick, she leaned forward and held the cigarette she already took a drag off of in front of him.
"I can share," she said simply, quietly enough for Rick to hear and Conrad to sleep through. She wondered for a minute if he could share, though. She was trying not to smoke a whole cigarette, but now that he'd taken that one she wondered if she wouldn't just light another immediately after; the first drag made her remember what it was like not to have a headache. Ah, well.
She rummaged through the bags she'd put in the back and emerged triumphantly with a beer. She'd actually never been much of a beer-drinker, but who was going to be picky when they had some at the gas station in the middle of an apocalypse. It trickled foam out slowly after she popped the tab, and she didn't even wait for it to stop before taking a long drink.
"I'd offer you one of my beautiful, coveted beers, but I think there's some sort of law about drinking and driving. And guess what, you're the DD." She chuckled to herself- the act tasted foreign in her mouth. The last time she laughed... was probably long before this thing started. The thought of Rick being a designated driver tickled her sense of humor like nothing she could even imagine.

As predicted, it was much to the surprise of Rick when he caught sight of Lorna's cigarette-offering hand in his periphery.
"Thanks!" He grinned, keeping his tone quiet (so as not to wake Conrad) but friendly (so as to let Lorna know he was honestly grateful). He took it from her with one hand, focusing hard to take a moderate amount of a drag. He held it in for a moment, feeling the smoke on his tongue, before inhaling fully and then exhaling out the side of his mouth. He somehow doubted, out of all the smells in the apocalypse, the second-hand smoke of a cigarette would bother Conrad, but still. Kid had worked hard; He deserved his sleep, and Rick didn't want to be the one to wake him yet.
Hearing the telltale sound of a opened can though, Rick went stiff. Now who was the one making noises like shaking the bag of treats? He kept shifting his eyes between the road and the rearview, seeing Lorna drinking something in the back. Was he just crazy, or did he smell beer?
Her laughter was like the pin going into a balloon, the tension in Rick releasing all at once. Yup, definitely beer. Somehow, he wasn't steering them off the road though as he tackled Lorna in the back seat and demanded she share instead. He looked at the cigarette still in his hand, not even debating it as he took another puff before holding it out, offering it back to her.
"Yer a cruel mistress." He teased, voice low and warm.

Lorna took another drink in hopes of getting the edge off of what just happened and was grateful when Rick passed back the cigarette. She sighed, relenting her previous standpoint as she came to the conclusion that Rick HAD to be able to hold his liquor. Even an entire six pack probably wouldn't be enough to make him drunk.
She took the cigarette and held the lukewarm can out to him so he could grab it.
"Drink responsibly," she joked before taking a drag. Her headache was all but gone and she couldn't be more relaxed. She could even feel her forehead smoothing out.

Eyes widening at the offering, Rick snatched the can faster than a man dying of thirst in the desert would run towards an oasis. He took a quick swig before she could take it back, slamming it back so hard it dribbled a trail of foam down one side of his mouth that he had to wipe off on his shoulder.
"Lorna, Lorna, Lorna..." He shook his head, his tone light and joking despite his supposed reprimand. "Aren't ya supposed ta be da responsible adult here? Lettin' me drink while driving. What if da zombie popo roll up n give us a ticket? All cauza you."
He took another drink, longer and slower this time, not caring that it was lukewarm. If this had the potential to be the last beer he ever drank, he was going to savour it.

"Rick," she said after a minute. "I am the zombie popo. I thought that was obvious." Seeing that he was very keen on the beer, she took another drag of the cigarette. In truth, she'd found a box of beer cans only partially gone. There were probably less than 20 cans but that was still a lot compared to what she'd seen lately. She decided not to mention it just yet.
The sky was lightening slowly as they drove and eventually Lorna and Rick switched the can and the cigarette. There was only a small swallow full left, but she didn't care. Her department had been taking the luxuries in the beginning until there were just scraps left, and she knew it. Unlike the others who took advantage of their status in the Spes workers, she cared.
"So it used to take about 8 hours to get there from here. It's probably...6-ish? I didn't bring my watch. Think we could get there by noon?" she challenged. Maybe if she gave him another beer he would find out how fast this thing could go.

He burst out laughing, the noise disturbing Conrad, who grumbled and glared at Rick. Rick gave him a sheepish smile, before Conrad rolled over and went back to resting quietly.
"Zombie popo..." Rick snickered again, unable to help himself. "Now you're encouraging me to speed? What would your zombie boss say?" Even as he teased her though, he sped up, taking her up on the challenge. He held out his hand backwards and wiggled his fingers, indicating he wanted it filled with something. Either a cigarette or a beer or something, he didn't care which right now.

"Eh," Lorna said after a minute, climbing over the seat to find something to eat and something to give Rick after the cigarette she placed in his hand was out, which would be soon. "I shot him in the head." She sat back down and when Rick looked at her in the rearview while he put the cigarette in his mouth, she shrugged. "He was a zombie."
She opened a bag of probably SUPER stale funyuns. "Score, guys! Good job!" Realizing she was encouraging him too much, though, she amended, "Or, I mean, good for snacks. But as for gas that was a burn out." Saved it. She popped open a beer and handed it to Rick as she ate some, yes exceedingly stale, funyuns. "Car food."

Shaking his head with a grin, Rick looked at her in the rearview again and raised an eyebrow.
"Ya can pretend not ta enjoy 'em all yeah want, but now I know." He winked, pointing at her in the rearview and mouthing the word 'funyuns'.
Leaving her to eat her snack in peace, Rick worked on enjoying his cigarette while driving. It wasn't long before he finished the cigarette, but with several hours of driving left to do, he tossed the butt out the window with a sigh and adjusted in his seat, trying to get more comfortable for the remainder of the long drive.

Lorna rolled her eyes and munched on her snack as she spread out in the backseat again, feet kicked up on the top of the door. She watched the clouds whizz by for what was probably quite some time. She fell asleep at some point but jerked awake again when the sun was almost in the uppermost part of the sky. She looked around.
"Are we in... North Dakota?" she asked, looking around. She yawned and stretched. "Why the hell did you let me sleep that long?" she asked with no anger behind her words. She brushed the crumbs off of her vest and dropped the half-eaten bag of stale funyuns on the floor.

"Think so." Rick shrugged, his shoulders creaking with the effort. He hadn't realized how long it'd been since he moved, wiggling his back now as his spine shifted. He grunted, stretching as much as he could until his back popped and he slumped forward again with a relieved sigh. "Ya needed yer sleep." He pointed out, and then tilted his head in the direction of their other passenger, who was still curled up in his own sleep.

Even though he was right, Lorna still frowned. "Yeah, but you need your sleep too," she said after a second until she saw a sign that said they were near Bismarck. "Oh! We're almost there." She looked over at him and looked down at the speedometer, shaking her head. "Incredible."
Looking around in all directions, she leaned over Conrad (who was still asleep- what even was he?) and pointed at a street. "You'll want to turn right over there," she said. "Glad I woke up when I did or we may have had to backtrack. Were you sleep-driving?" she asked accusingly.

Rick stared at her profile in mock-offense, his jaw hanging open as though she had just made a rude insinuation about his mother.
"I beg yer pardon. I am just dat amazin' of a driver." He didn't bring up the time his eyelids started to droop until he thought he saw a zombie in the middle of the road, but it turned out to just be the haze of sleep making him see things. Still, the boost of adrenaline had helped, and now he was getting another little burst of energy at hearing they were almost there.
"Besides, it's whatever, right? I'll be able ta sleep at yer place. Just point out a safe spot on da floor n I'll be good."
