That book was interesting - she didn't remember Mein Fuhrer writing much when she took her class. Her brain quickly switched topics, however, at Lorna's words. Her arms locked themselves together behind her back.
"Mm. Mmhmm! Yep." she said, very convincingly. It wasn't that she didn't want to show her gratitude. It was just that the word "chores" thrust her eight years in the past and had her shirking dishes. She did want to help, and she very much wanted a place to stay.

Lorna was satisfied with the response and continued toward the pump-house, checking to see if it was locked, which it was. She turned back to Skylar.
"Well, then. We should probably re-fill your bottle and start finding something a bit more suitable for you to wear if possible." She didn't bother saying 'no offense' or sugar-coating anything. By the rips and tears in the thin layers of fabric, she got the feeling that Skylar already knew she wasn't properly dressed for an Apocalyptic setting.

Skylar: She nodded, trying not to be too eager at the mention of refilling her water bottle. At the comment on her clothes, she ruefully tugged at her ripped tank top and looked over her decimated leggings. This had been one of her favorite lounge-around-the-house outfits. Definitely not something she had planned to hike cross country in. Still, she felt oddly attached to the clothing, considering they had been through so much together. Maybe she wouldn't get rid of it, after all.
"Yeah, that would be nice," she said, following Fuhrer back into the house. As they went in the back door this time, she glanced around for the rabbit, wondering where he'd scampered off to. She was also becoming curious about this Rick, but she figured she'd meet him sooner or later. She followed Lorna to another store of water, and quickly guzzled off another bottlefull as her former teacher shook her head and refilled it obligingly. She did her best to only sip this time, following Lorna back to the stairs and up to one of the bedrooms.
"This seems like an awful big house," she said, looking around appreciatively. Who'd've thought Mein Fuhrer was set up in style?

Lorna turned to go up the staircase and led Skylar down the hallway to her room, past a few other bedrooms. She wasn't surprised that this was her offered input, having heard it twice before by the other people in her charge. Saying nothing at first, she opened her closet door and rummaged through some clothing on hangers before moving to her dresser in the back of the walk-in. The fact that this used to be her parents' bedroom was something she tried not to think about, though sometimes she felt like a trespasser. She felt this way when she opened the dresser and found what she knew to be some of her mother's clothes in the bottom drawer.
"This was my parents' house- the house I grew up in," she said simply, deciding not to offer anymore information.
After tossing some clothes to Skylar, she turned and looked her up and down before finding another pair of her smaller shorts. She was fairly convinced none of the bottoms would fit her, but she could try.
"Any of this look like it'll fit?"

Skylar: she took the clothes and looked them over, trying not to wince. The top probably would fit her, and while it wasn't something she normally would have picked first, at least the cut wasn't too awful. She held the shorts up to her hips, and they were at least one inch too wide. She sighed and tossed them back.
"The shirt I think is ok, but I don't think the rabbit could handle it if I wound up pants-less because of those things." She held the shirt up to her. It would probably be fine, it was just a v-cut t shirt, although she didn't personally go for that shade of green.
"So should I change now or wait for us to dreg up some pants? And..." She half expected a yes, because Lorna seemed to have every freaking thing, but she also knew this was probably too much to hope for. "Do you have like... A bath?" She knew a shower was too much to hope for, considering all the water companies were completely abandoned. "I mean I would even go for a sufficiently damp cloth." She could feel the layers of grit doing their best to merge with her skin.

Even Lorna, who generally offered a smile about once a week at most, couldn't help but give a lop-sided grin at that.
"Tell you what, give me just a second." She made her way to the door of her room and stuck her head out to call down the stairs.
"Conrad! Rev it up!"
"Right away!!" echoed faintly up the stairs. Lorna held her index finger up to Skylar in a 'just wait' gesture. After a few minutes and a lot of scampering and door slamming downstairs, the lights flickered on.
"Go ahead and use the suite," she said, pointing to the master bathroom. "Everything works in there. The towels were washed and dried last week and most of them haven't been touched. Enjoy."

Skylar: Her eyes grew wide a she took in what Lorna was saying. The... suite? She tripped down the small hallway to the door Lorna had pointed to, opening it with the smallest intake of breath. It was a bathroom. A real, proper, master bathroom. The shower just stared at her, sparkling clean and inviting her to use it. She stripped herself as though her clothes were on fire and stepped in, barely drawing the curtain before turning on the water. She tried her best to contain any noises of satisfaction as the hot water streamed down her exhausted body, although she was not entirely successful. All pretense was dropped, however, as an ear-piercing squeal pierced through the entire floor when she discovered the shampoo and soap. She had BOTH!!!!
She luxuriated in the shower, washing her hair twice and nearly crying when she found conditioner. She didn't even notice it was almost gone, she just squeezed a glob onto her hand and massaged it in. She picked the fruitiest soap available (out of two) and lathered it on thick. No razors, but she didn't even care. She completely lost track of time as weeks of dirt and blood and grit swirled down the drain.
She finally stepped out, drawing one of the thick, fluffy towels off the rack. She wrapped it around her, securing it in place expertly. She chose another one and toweled her hair vigorously. When she was done she looked in the mirror as it fell around her shoulders in a tousled halo, her cheeks and arms still pink from their thorough scrubbing. She approached the counter, realizing something else she may find. And sure enough, there was a hairbrush in the top drawer.
She turned and made a face at the clothes on the floor. She was not looking forward to putting those on now that she was so clean.
"Uh, Lorna?" She called through the door, "Do you think you could get me some other clothes?" Crap. She hoped she was still there. She'd brought the shirt in with her, but her undergarments and pants were straight disgusting to her now. She began brushing her hair as she waited, after freeing it of its burden of red hairs. She was determined and slowly working out all the kinks and knots.

After going through some of the freshly laundered articles of clothing from the last week that Rick had taken care of, she emerged from the closet with a laundry basket of things she thought might maybe fit Skylar. Some of them were her mother's and few of them were her sister's, but she supposed they weren't making use of them now.
When she'd heard Skylar's cry from the bathroom, she set the laundry basket next to the door.
"I've set some things out for you to look at," she explained. "I'll leave you to finish then." With that she left the room and shut the door, understanding how a shower must have felt to someone who likely hadn't had a proper source of water in weeks.

Skylar: She opened the door and nabbed the basket, dragging it into the bathroom. She dug through the selection, grateful beyond words that Lorna had included underwear. She slipped into a clean pair without caring too much, and dug through the bras. The only ones available were either too big or too small, and she figured she'd err on the side of snug. She pulled on the shirt from earlier, not seeing anything better, and dug through all the pants there were. She eventually found a pair of gray drawstring pajama pants that worked. What the heck was up with Lorna's family's hips? She tightened the string until she wasn't worried about it falling down anymore and looked in the mirror once more.
She finally recognized herself again. Her hair was already drying and hanging loose. Her face was clean and fresh, and she could actually tell her original skin tone. She picked up her iPod and headphones from where she had quickly coiled them on the counter. She slipped them around her neck and tucked the iPod into her pocket, thankful that the pants even had any.
Feeling capable of taking on the entire world, she set a song playing through them that fit the mood. As she wandered back out into the hallway, wondering where everyone had gone, strains of upbeat music softly drifted around her,
I'm on the up and up, I know what I'm capable of, I'm on the up and up,

As Skylar slipped out of the bathroom, her music helped to dampen whatever hint of footsteps there might have been creeping up behind her.
"Who're you?" Rick growled, loud enough to hear over the tune coming out of her headphones. He kept his accent to a minimum, speaking clearly as he kept his spine stiff and used his full height to tower over the petite girl in front of him. Lorna or Conrad must know she was here, since she'd obviously had access to their facilities. He wouldn't be surprised if the kid could be suckered into sharing their water with a pretty face, buuuut... it was also entirely possible the drill sergeant had decided to house another stray for some reason.
He folded his arms over his chest, muscle semi-purposefully tensed so the mass of them stood out. He leaned down towards her face, eyebrows glowering and teeth revealed by his pulled back upper lip.
"Ya gonna answer me, girlie?"

Skylar: Admittedly, she did jump pretty high when the gruff man addressed her. She turned quickly to see him. He was pretty intimidating, with a cap pulled low over his eyes and a bulky stature all focused on bearing down towards her, rough facial hair that obviously wasn't looked after (which begged the thought, suddenly. She hadn't seen any razors and the rabbit was smooth as a baby's bottom. How young was he?) After a few moments she just grew annoyed. Who was this guy, walking around like he owned the - oh, wait. Well that seemed obvious. She crossed her arms impetuously and stuck out a nonexistent hip.
"And I suppose you're Rick?" she asked, eyeing him up and down critically. To be quite honest he wasn't bad to look at, not cute like the rabbit, but he had a great build. And awesome tattoos. But she had to keep up the pretense. "I thought you'd be taller."

He did his best to hide his shock as the impertinent brat addressed him by name, but besides a slight widening on the eyes nothing showed on his face.
He took a moment to decide between glowering deeper, or mocking her, but if she already knew who he was - and was trying to mock his height - he chose the much more obvious (and fun!) route of mocking her. Copying her gesture, he swung his hips to one side and stood with his hands on him like he was a fellow valley girl.
"Like, omigawd, I thought ya'd have bigger boobs after puberty, Tiffany! But we can't all get what we want, bummerrrrrr." He drawled, voice high-pitched and squeaky in his best sixteen-year-old girl imitation. He shifted tones abruptly for his next question, though his hands remained planted on his cocked hips. "Answer de question. Name. Now."

Skylar: Her eyes widened slightly and her nostrils flared, a slight blush creeping up. She knew she shouldn't let some dumb insult get to her, but wow that guy was rude!! She turned away, arms still crossed, trying to fight down the probably over reacting amount of anger welling up.
"I don't think you deserve it." she said, frowning. How could Lorna put up with this guy? She guessed that her old teacher had always been tough. But... was this guy the valuable one? Why would somebody valuable have to be such a butt?

Laughing at her offense, Rick removed his hands from his hips to shrug them and rudely brush past her, heading down the stairs.
"Yeah, 'kay, yer majesty." He called over his shoulder, looking back at her as he went down a few steps. "But ya do realize until ya tell me, I'm jus' gon' give ya sum kinna horrible nickname, right?" He winked, sending her a wide leering grin as he headed further down the stairs in search of Lorna.
"Looooooor?" He called, not at all mindful of the possibility that he should be interested in keeping quiet. "Oh, LOOOOOOOOOR? I found yer stray lil puddy tat upstairs! Ya mind tellin' me where da bowls o' milk are so I can feed her?"

Lorna sighed. Naturally they had to meet when she wasn't in the room.
"If you're hoping to ridicule me for taking someone in, you can save it. What are you doing here anyway?" she asked, setting her book down and hopping off of the dryer to make her way toward the stairs. She'd decided to do something productive with the electricity and wash her leggings, undershirt and cargo vest, so she wasn't looking forward to his remarks on the fact that she was just wearing a t-shirt and her shorter-than-she-liked-but-very-good-for-protection-and-not-hindering-movement-at-the-same-time jean shorts.
"You said you were scavenging today." She found him as he reached the bottom of the staircase and folded her arms across her chest in disapproval.
