Jane raised her eyebrows at the idea. He was right, there was safety in numbers. But there was also...
"To be frank, how can I know I can trust you?" she asked, looking between Rashad and Malina. "I mean, you could ask the same of me, but it's two against one and well..." not everything is sunshine and heated motels, she finished in her head.

Rashad cleared his throat and thought for a moment. She was totally right!! He supposed Malina and himself were so used to traveling in groups that perhaps it wasn't very normal to trust someone you just met. True, he was aware a lot this was their culture at play too, but...
Malina popped her gum- she had been chewing it this whole time! "Yeah," She said, filling in the silence, she felt kind of attacked, but it was better they brought it up now than later! "That's true. But, we really don't have any reason to hurt you! See, look," She unbuckled her seatbelt slowly and put both of her hands out, "I'm chill," She said to Jane and turned around in her seat. Malina unhatched the back window the the truck and coughed when the cold air attacked her face. "Okay, look here, yeah?" She lifted up the tarp on the truck's bed to reveal an assortment of clothes and canned food, and two gallons of water. She quickly put the tarp back and closed the window, but cold air still wove around the three of them.
Her body forcibly shivered so bad she couldn't speak, so Rashad mentioned that they really don't need another food source, not that they would ever resort to cannibalism anyway.
After a silence, and the heat was restored, Malina perked up again, "You don't have to be worried about Rashad here either! He's not a creep or anything. If he was, I wouldn't have brought you in, you know?" Rashad shot her an offended look, "I would never!! Hey, you know what? I'll have you know I am a licensed doctor, I did not spend my life reading just so that I could turn around and abuse-"
"-Anyway, point be made, we're doing fairly well. You should see me shoot, too!! I'm the second best shot in our old group! ...Er... I mean, we traveled with other people like, before. We scavenge, you know? Get supplies, move supplies, that sort of stuff. We don't have anymore uh...(Rashad butted in and said "Clients")...in this area, so we're really stuck, actually."
Rashad sighed, "We don't want to hurt you, but we will admit, we were hoping you knew this area fairly well. We've been in Texas for a majority of...you know, and we have no idea what's around here. When we left our past...company.... we were only supposed to stay in North Dakota for a fraction of the time before retreating down south again."

Jane waited as they came up with an answer, slightly hoping they'd come up with a good one. She awkwardly moved aside as Malina reached in the back, her back pressing into the car door. Her eyes widened as she saw all the supplies they had. Well damn.
The cold wind rustled her bandana a bit, and she pushed it down as Malina reassured her about Rashad.
She still wasn't completely sold but... she hadn't been the last time either, and that turned out... okay. More than okay. And they seemed nice. So had they. She felt adrenaline build up inside of her as she sorted through the options.
She pulled a leg up between her and Malina and stared out the window. "I kind of know the area. Not as well as a local but I've been around for a few months." She vaguely wondered how long she could get away with wearing the bandana.

Malina kicked her legs out, and rubbed her shoulders. This cold was going to kill her, it really was! She shifted around of her tablet, and clicked it on. She didn't have much battery left, but she really didn't care. Awkward silences like this just made her uncomfortable! She started to sort through songs again until she noticed Jane move her bandanna down. She had to be hiding her face, right? Did she have good reason then? She stared at her for a moment before looking back to her screen. She was familiar, but there wasn't really anything Malina could do about that now, she supposed.
Rashad nodded and smiled, but focused on the road. "So you plan on staying with us then? As long as you need, really."

Jane, not noticing Malina's speculation, nodded. "If you're really alright with it. I don't know how much help I'll be, but I'll try to do what I can." She smiled at Rashad, not that he could see.
She looked over at Malina and saw her tablet out again. In almost a whisper she asked, "You wouldn't happen to have any Jay Z on there, would you?"

Malina looked at her, confused. "Who's...Who's what? Jay what?"
Rashad let out a compressed laugh and stopped at a dead light. He leaned over and clicked the tablet.
"And...people like this guy?" Malina joked. Actually it was pretty catchy! Rashad, of course, knew all the words!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Weeeeell, here we are girls! Home sweet home!" Rashad was sure his truck-his child- was carefully parked SO BAD that there was no WAY anyone would ever believe a living human actually parked a car like that. The...weirdest part is he actually....didn't...plan that... Parking was never fun!
Malina slammed the door closed and stretched out. They had drove all night and it really sucked. It always sucked, but it was even worse because Rashad insisted on listening to this same Jay guy on repeat for half the trip.
"It looks like shit!" "HEY," he snapped, "Watch your language! It looks pretty shabby now, but I think it should work. I'm sure Jane thinks it's a great idea, right?"
Malina was fairly confident that anyone would half a brain would see this was a terrible idea, but there really wasn't an other option. The motel itself was pretty run down. She was fairly certain that when it DID see use it wasn't...good use, seeing it was small and in a pretty remote location. The weirdest thing was how seemingly untouched it had been- it was actually pretty creepy.
Rashad started to unload his truck-who Malina has promptly named Ghandi- and gave the sad building a pretty optimistic look! While North Dakota did have its downsides, he did suspect a rural area to build it's buildings side by side rather than by height. New Yorkers would never be so lucky to find such a wide Motel, with few rooms too. They also had visible chimneys, which were a plus. There was a main building which did show some evidence of being raided (one could guess they probably contained vending machines, at one point). Behind that, "rooms" that were actually only connected by an adjacent wall on each side were in two lines facing each other. They looked as if they were mini-houses, each complete with a front door and one window. In its hayday, it wasn't very clean at all, but actually seemed to fit in with the rust and dust that seemingly covered everything else!
When each person had as much supplies as they could carry, Rashad got his lock picking tools ready! Scavengers were always ready to get a door open, and especially in such a way others would never tell they were there. "Okay kiddos, pick a room, any room! Your favorite! Might I suggest however, that we go with the opposite of our first instinct- should we get unwelcome visitors, that would be their first choice to check! Not that I plan on it." "Because no one's stupid enough to stay up North?" Rashad ignored that, "You pick Jane! You're lucky number three!"
Jane crawled out of the car on the opposite side and took a quick moment to readjust her bandana. Hearing her name, she peeked over the car. "O-oh, it's um, great!" Honestly, Malina was right. It looked like shit.
Jane loaded her arms up with as much as she could carry (which wasn't a lot), side stepped some bricks strewn about, and followed the siblings to the motel. She wondered why Rashad called her kiddo, and realized that they thought she was Malina's age. That could actually work out.
Surprised to be picked first to well, pick, she took a moment to look around. Her first instinct was to go to the back of one of the rows but... "Maybe that one?" she half asked, pointing in the middle of the right building. No one would check a random middle room, would they?
"Very smart kiddo, excellent choice!" He happily made his way over and set his bundle down on the ground next to him! "Speaking of which, would you both like a lesson on lock pick-" "-No."
Rashad blinked at Malina for a moment before nodding and just picking the lock. He'd just teach Jane later, if she didn't know already! And if she wanted to. Yeah.
The rust buildup on the lock's inside made it quite picky, pun intended, but it wasn't the worst one he had to pick, really! The door clicked a few more times before it clicked open! He didn't even need his stethoscope! ....Which he did have, of course!
Malina stepped over him to go in first- He was always too stupid to check behind every corner and the like! Actually, nothing was really thrown about, which was kinda weird. "So like...no one's been in here before then? ....OOookay..." Still, it wasn't sparkling. There was the main room, with a couch and a shitty table opposite one of those hella old box TVs. To the left was a small kitchen, consisting of a sink and an oven (could they get that working??). There was a door to a bathroom too, opened invitingly. Running water miiiight be out of the question, but Malina shurgged. She had no idea how that worked, Rashad would figure it out, probably.
Rashad waited for Jane to go in before getting his bundle too. "How's it looking in there?" "Like a piece of shit!" "Well...Okay." He'd kinda have to take that, really.
Jane tagged along behind the two, surveying the area as they walked. She noticed the outline of a mountain opposite of where they were heading and made note of it. She could possibly find a cave to hide in if need be or- stop. Everything will be fine.
When she turned back, the siblings had gotten the door unlocked and Malina was already inside. She stayed back while Malina checked it out, and when she heard her complaining call, she made her way over. Peeking inside the door, she confirmed that it was pretty bad. It made Lorna's house look like Buckingham Palace. At least it still had a bed and other comforts.
She dumped some of the supplies out of the way and looked cautiously at Rashad. "What one will you be staying in?"
Malina dropped all her supplies on one of the two beds in the room. When she did, dust flew up into her face and she coughed and waved a hand. She had to admit though, minus just the windchill outside was kinda nice. It was still pretty cold though, and she forced out a breath.
Rashad set his stuff down, and immediately took a seat on the couch to untie his shoes. Malina noticed with an "Oh," and did the same, pulling hers off in one swift motion! While the siblings did have a slight coat of dirt, the only perfectly clean part of them was their feet! They both put their shoes next to the door, not really expecting Jane to do the same, it was just something they were used to back home!
Malina elbowed Rashad, who was staring off into space when Jane asked him something. He lowered an eyebrow before realizing that Jane probably felt uncomfortable sharing a small room with a man. Which, he had to admit, was understandable, especially during these times. He..didn't look too shady, right? Maybe...Maybe he should shave...
Malina on the other hand remembered Rashad telling Jane that. She was actually kinda interested to see what he'd do, honestly! They usually shared rooms and the like, and SHE would definitely appreciate a change!
"Oh! Right, right! See, some older motels tend to have adjoining rooms, and for parties of several, they can be connected!" He...was really, really lucky they picked THIS motel, evidently! "I'll be sleeping in the one juxtaposed, if you don't mind! I'll get you both sorted first though." While this was the gentlemanly thing, he could use this for trial and error, too! The door towards the rightmost wall would be connected to the leftmost wall on the opposite side, but shouldn't be as hard to pick as the lock up front, naturally, seeing as it wasn't nearly exposed to the ~elements!~
He rubbed his chin (now very self conscious of the stubble!) and looked around. Firstly, they needed light to work! "Let's clean the windows, okiedokie? Light would be good!"
Jane /did/ kind of mind, though she wasn't going to say anything- for now. She decided to keep her shoes on. Always be prepared, they use to say! She grimaced when she remembered who "they" were.
Looking towards the windows, she grimaced again. How to get out of this…. “Wouldn’t that give away the fact that we’re here?” Good one.
CandyLeptic
Malina's face widened and she laughed- SHE TOTALLY OUTSMARTED HIM. Oh man, Jane could stab her now and she honestly would let it slide- that was beautiful.
CandyLeptic
Rashad blinked for a moment...That....that was actually really smart reasoning. "I....I guess you'd be right! What could be another light source, then... We might as well just start the fire if you want, girls. Would that be all right?" HE WAS ACTUALLY SUPER SELF CONCIOUS. WOULD that be alright??? Would smoke give them away too? On NO OH NO
macxcheese
Jane smiled, pretty pleased with herself. Jane- one, work- zero. She sat on the bed and nodded, not really seeing a way around a fire. "Do we need wood though?" She wanted to slap herself as soon as she said that. One point for work.
CandyLeptic
Rashad thought for a moment- "Here kiddos! I'll go get the wood myself, but I need you both to go through here and collect all of the paper you possibly can. Wallpaper, newspaper, paper towel, anything. Check the kitchen first. Also," he laughed nervously, "Spare the toilet tissue! That sound okay?" He took his bag and fixated his coat, "Malina, my lock picking stuff is over there if you need it, but I think you
'lll be okay! Jane, Malina is armed, so don't worry! She's a lot more capable then she looks!" He winked and she growled. "Get out of here Rashad!! We can find the stupid paper!" He laughed and headed out the door before she mumbled, "Don't die," as passively as ever.
CandyLeptic
Rashad shook as the cold hit him- Sure wasn't India, that was forsure! But it was always nice to have some alone time. Plus, he had this looming feeling he made Jane uncomfortable! He closed the door and trodded down the steps and into the nearby woods. Woods were always so confusing to him! He held his backpack straps and carefully stepped over greenery and the like, and started gathering loose branches and dry leaves (Which were hard to find under snow!!) He did this for awhile before seeing a furry white thing- A BUNNY. "AAWWWEEE" he murmured!! BUNNNIIIEESSS. He slowly approached it and set his bundle down, and then everrrr so slowly, reached into his backpack. He took out a few crackers (Malina would never know!) and crumbled them, and let the bunny eat out of his palm! It was the little things, he hummed!
macxcheese
Internally relieved, she started inspecting the room for any paper products. Of course there was the paper towel- which she went and grabbed- but what else… Out of the corner of her eye she noticed something in the corner of the kitchen. She neared it cautiously, squinting her eyes to see through the gloom. It was… a notebook? She picked it up and
almost threw it in the pile. That was before she noticed some writing in it. She flipped it open and read the scribbles.
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book” (Psalm 56:8)/
Hm. Jane looked to Malina and back at the book. “Hey, look at this!” she called to her. “Think we should keep it?”
CandyLeptic
Malina walked over with a handful of ripped wallpaper that was surprisingly easy to tear off in sheets. She already did one wall, and was amazed to find another layer underneath (was that normal in America?) and took that, too. She dumped her stuff and inspected the book- Book? "What? What is this?" It wasn't a Bible, so why was it here? That didn't make sense if someone left it here- the whole room was clean awaiting for new visitors. Werid "Yeah, I guess so. What's in it?"
macxcheese
Jane flipped through pages, skimming all the little notes. "Looks like mostly diary entries. There’re a lot of Bible passages and a few hints too. Here- ‘Chimney easily clogged, use bent branch to remove ash.’” She flipped through it some more, mumbling random words that stuck out to her. “It might be pretty useful!”
CandyLeptic
Malina nodded and looked at the sad chimney. "Yeah. Maybe it was super ... (She forgot the word ghetto) icky and people needed that kind of stuff? Bible passages are kinda odd though." Americans and their passages! "Let's keep it." Rashad would probably want to read it, but she didn't really plan on telling him about it until AFTER he did most of the work. She did decide to do him one quick favor though. "Let's fix this right now, then,
CandyLeptic
she mumbled as she searched through the closet to find a minivac. Not even looking to turn it on, she stuck the nozzel up the chimney and undid a clog. So gross! She went to set it down before realizing it was ~battery powered~! "Whoa." She looked up to Jane wearily, "That means we'll have to vacuum..."
CandyLeptic
Rashad was getting a fairly good bundle going, but now was accompanied by the bunny, who would wiggle through the snow slowly and peek at him, hoping for more food. He smiled brightly but was also worried, and would mutter "Sorry, I can't give too much more!" before 'cracking' and breaking up another cracker!! Then he'd feel bad and walk away, and the process would repeat!
macxcheese
“Alright,” Jane replied. She set it on one of the beds as Malina grabbed the vacuum, jumping when she turned it on. She couldn’t help but shudder at the gross ash cloud the vacuum was sucking up and kept her unhappy look when Malina gave her realization. Softly she said, “We won’t if you put that thing back where it came from!” Point for Jane.
CandyLeptic
Malina laughed and put a hand on her hip, "You know, I like the way you think!" She promptly walked over to the closet and returned it. Rashad would find it eventually, but put-off work was the best work. "Hey, which bed do you want? I can sleep closest to the door." The bed she was referring to was both closer to the main door and the one to Rashad's room. She crossed her arms proudly, "I don't know if you'd believe him, but my aim's really, REALLY good! I was taught by the best shot in our last group, you know! She was a skeet shooter." She still didn't really know what that meant, honestly!
macxcheese
Jane was glad the other girl actually went along with it and began looking again for more paper. “That’s fine with me!” she told Malina while reaching into a dusty cupboard. She pulled out a magazine and threw it on the pile.
“Wow, really?” she asked, actually surprised. She gave Malina an impressed look, though she also did not know what a skeet shooter was. It sounded good though!
CandyLeptic
"Yeah!!" She smiled brightly- it was nice to have SOMEONE who appreciated her talent, unlike her brother! New company was actually pretty nice! She walked over to the bathroom and counted the rolls of toilet paper- if they had three rolls, and Rashad had three rolls in his, then all of the rooms probably did too? How many where there...? Six on both sides, so twelve times three would be... Oh! There were magazines...in the bathroom? She took them in hand and brought them to the main room, showing Jane. "Why are these in the bathroom? American thing?" They were all of women too, but underdressed? Weirdest thing?
macxcheese
Jane looked over her shoulder at the magazines and dropped the scraps of wallpaper she was holding. She ran over and almost snatched the magazines out of Malina’s hands, then placed them in the middle of the pile where they couldn’t be seen. Who knows what was in those!
“How about you keep at the wallpaper and I’ll go dig around, kay?” she suggested.
CandyLeptic
Malina raised an eyebrow and looked down at her now empty hands. "Uh... Okay." She began to work at tearing the wallpaper off, and after about a half and hour or so, she would have bet every scrap of paper was in a pile in the middle of the room. She sat on her bed and let out a yawn, and looked lazily over to Jane. "He'll probably be back soon. He acts like he's really tough, but he doesn't like the cold either." Plus, Rashad had a pretty okay track record when it came to being not dead.
CandyLeptic
Rashad set his large bundle on the stairs. "No!" He whispered. "Shoo!" The bunny looked up at him. It had really, really cute red eyes!! He picked it up ("So stupid", he told himself, "rabies"!) and set it over a few feet away. "You don't know my sister, bunny, she'd EAT you." The bunny looked up and hopped closer to him. "NO BUNNY." He bit his lip, "Stupid!" If he would have kept his lock picking stuff, he could have picked the lock into his OWN room and hoarded the bunny in there. He knelt down to it, "Okay, okay bunny. Give me a few minutes. You can stay with me." The bunny stiffed at something in the snow and he managed to pick up his branches and swing into the door! It wasn't hot in the room, but he had got a pretty okay work out, and it was kinda nice to not have the wind blowing in your face. "Wow girls, I'm really impressed! That's a lot of paper!
macxcheese
Jane scavenged every sheet and scrap of paper possible, adding to the pile. When she was done, she sat on the edge of her bed and waited with Malina. She tried to come up with a conversation starter, but without que cards she wasn’t very good at it. Finally Rashad came back, bringing a pile of sticks with him. Jane shrugged at his comment, not know
ing what to say to that. All she really wanted right now was a warm fire and a good night’s rest. She could feel her eyes grow heavy at the thought.
CandyLeptic
After the fire was started and the room was properly insulated with paper (it was a lot of trial and error!) Malina had to admit she did get a pretty good night's sleep!! She hadn't slept in a legitimate bed in a long while! The fire had died though, and the mixture of the cold in the room and the light in the windows make her wake. She stretched her arms and squinted- a lot more light was coming from the window then yesterday! She could have sworn they were dirtier... She got up and lit the fire again. She tried to do it quietly, but could hear Jane stir. Opps!! At least Rashad would still be sleeping. He didn't wake up by himself for the most part, so it was usually her job to do it.
macxcheese
Jane yawned while she stretched, feeling a nice breeze on her face. She looked over at Malina and blinked blearily at her, giving her a good morning smile. Then she realized that smile could be seen, and her eyes grew wide. She reached towards her neck and felt her bandana around it. Well. No one could say she didn’t try.
CandyLeptic
Malina didn't really smile back at first, but instead tilted her head. Jane really did look super familiar. Did she just have that kind of face, or... Malina started to rekindle the fire and poke at it, "You don't really have to cover you face, you know. You can if you want, but you don't have to." She looked into the fire for a moment before deciding that if her and Jane were up this early, Rashad had to be too. She walked over and pounded on his door a few times before walking back to her bed. It'd take him a while, probably!
macxcheese
Jane was so confused. She’d thought they listened to pop music, because of their ipad, but maybe she was wrong? Either way, she wasn’t going back to the stuffy piece of cloth if they weren’t gonna recognize her!
CandyLeptic
Rashad was wrapped not only in his own blanket but Malina's too, which was really nice because he never actually could get his own fire started!!! Insulating his room sounded SO hard and he had been so tired, so he just....slept instead! He mumbled a "Nooooooo" and "More sleep pleeease" before Malina knocked again and he slowly sat up, still essentially a burrito from the blankets around him. He blinked around the room before getting up and getting dressed, ect ect. Before knocking on the girls' room, he opened his door to see just how cold it was today. It was about as cold as yesterday but- there was something outside his door.
CandyLeptic
Malina got dressed- it wasn't really hard. She slept in her hoodie and a pair of shorts, and honestly she just slid pants over them. Getting dressed and worrying about clothing was so much work, and after she got used to sleeping with a hoodie, it made the winter nights a lot better! She put her hair up and reached into her bag and rustled around until she managed to take out a bottle with solution inside- hand lotion mixed with baby oil, crushed flowers and showergel mixed with mater. She poured a little on her hands and applied it to her face and neck, and then held the bottle out to Jane- "Do you want some? It's like, a quick bath!"
macxcheese
Jane moved to the bathroom, where she donned a pair of kid’s jeans and a sweatshirt. She finger brushed her hair, braided it, and dug through her pocket to retrieve some eyeliner.
She came out with her bundle of clothes and raised an eyebrow at Malina’s “quick bath”. She decided to try it and nodded. “Sure, please!” Once that was all rubbed on her face, she glanced at the food stores they’d brought in. “So what’s for breakfast?”
CandyLeptic
Malina was about to answer before she heard a knock. Before anything she murmured "What's the password?" like a kid! You could hear a sigh and a tired Rashad reply with "Ghandi would have been a great president..." Malina opened the door and made a face. "WHAT is that!?" He was holding meat tied together, and looked quite confused. Malina was impressed though, "You did it!!! You finally hunted something! See? It's not that bad!" He started to shake his head but she took it from him and cut him off, "Breakfast!! Is this rabbit? Cool!" Rashad just nodded to himself. He did check to see if his bunny was there last night and it wasn't but... There was NO WAY this was the same bunny!! Just...an animal didn't finish it off or something... As he thought, Malina had already started to cook it over their now warm fire. "Do you like rabbit Jane?"
macxcheese
Jane made a face at the rabbit and looked at Rashad. “I’ve never had it, though I suppose beggars can’t be choosers!” She had to admit that her stomach grumbled when the smell of cooking meat hit her nose. It couldn’t be that bad!
A few days later they’d gotten the water working with the vacuum and everyone had gotten a shower. Although it wasn’t very soothing, what with the water heater not working. Jane toweled her hair with a dirty t-shirt and sat on her bed. She grabbed the journal and opened to the last entry.
I cried out to you, Lord.
I begged my Lord for mercy:
“What is to be gained by my spilled blood,
by my going down into the pit?
Does dust thank you?
Does it proclaim your faithfulness?
Lord, listen and have mercy on me!
Lord, be my helper!”
You changed my mourning into dancing.
You took off my funeral clothes
and dressed me up in joy
so that my whole being
might sing praises to you and never stop.
Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever. (Psalm 30:8-12)/
CandyLeptic
Malina pulled her hair up- wet hair on your shoulders were the worst! Rashad was using their bathroom right now to bathe. He mentioned something about a rabbit and being scared to use his own room. Such a nerd... She looked over Jane, "Hey, what are you reading?" The fire had just gone out, but there was enough heat in the room to last them a good while!
macxcheese
Jane sniffled and wiped her eyes, then held out the notebook. “It’s the one from before. I don’t think… I don’t think they made it.” She said the last part at the bed. '
Malina looked concerned and got a little better look. "Huh? You mean the person who wrote it-"
"Maaaaaallliiinnnaaa!" A worried voice came from their bathroom.
Malina looked and then back to Jane, and then sighed and called back, "What?"
"If you have a second could you- OOOOH NOOOOOOOO"
She didn't move right away, but instead her brows sunk. Eight years of college and he still can't function as a normal human. Amazing.
Rashad came out of the bathroom in a hurry with a towel around his waist, soaking wet. He was visibly shaken and doing a sort of worried hop. "There's...there's...."
Malina walked over and let out a "WHAT." She shook her head. "You can't be serious."
"Please."
"I swear...." She went into the bathroom and came out with a spider hanging from a web. She held it next to Rashad, who shrinked back a bit. "YOU ARE A GROWN MAN."
"...." "Rashad." "A grown man....who doesn't like spiders...."
Malina really really liked bugs, but she really really didn't like when Rashad freaked out, so she slid on her shoes and opened the door to let the little guy free. She stood outside for a minute- it was late evening and already dark- before looking a little closer in the snow. "Hey Rashad, we're you out here today?"
He was in the bathroom again, quite embarrassed, but still answered back, "Me? No."
She squinted. There were footprints outside. They looked to be Rashad's size but... Didn't it snow last night? Or maybe that was two nights ago. He was outside then, so... She shrugged. She knew these days everyone was quick to worry, but... she still couldn't shake it. She closed the door, and was sure to lock it.
Jane was concerned by the yell from the bathroom, but it quickly turned into shock when Rashad ran out! Half naked man, not cool!! She stumbled backwards and tripped over a shoe, landing between the two beds with a "thump"! She just stayed there until she heard a door click, then got up cautiously. She hoped that wasn't a reoccurring event!
CandyLeptic "Sorry" Malina sighed and sat on her bed, "He's not always that stupid." That was such a lie. SUCH a lie. But obviously he was making her uncomfortable... Rashad, in the bathroom, just let out an embarrassed "Ahhh...." _______________________ CandyLeptic Two nights later, the snow fell so heavily that no light came out of the perfectly cleaned windows. It was nighttime though or, at least what the team guessed to be! Malina was already asleep in her bed, sans covers. Rashad tried to sleep in his own room but it was SO COLD. SO COLD. He never actually got his own fire to light, for some reason. It was half insulated, but he used a majority of the paper for the girls' room. He slipped through the door between their rooms (It wasn't closed just yet, Malina just went to bed fairly early!) and whispered, just in case Jane was up! "It's just me! I'm just going to use the sink real quick!" He slipped through the rooms and found their bathroom, which was the only one with running water. He splashed his face a few times before lighting a lighter he had snuck in, too! He had recently shaved, which was nice but...faced the terrible dilemma of ~grown man acne.~ His stubble concealed it, but also made it worse. It was a paradox, really! macxcheeseJane sat cross-legged on her bed and flipped through the pages of a magazine she'd brought with her. Her teddy bear sat in her lap and she absentmindedly scratched it's head. She sighed at hair styles she'd never be able to recreate again, jumping when she suddenly heard Rashad's voice. Her hand crumpled part of the magazine and she nodded wide eyed at him as he made his way to the sink. She sat completely still for a while before asking, "Did you ever get that fire started?" CandyLeptic "Well, actually," He muttered as he closely inspected his face, "I...got fairly close! The uh...altitude makes it quite difficult..." That sounded smart, he hoped! He flicked the lighter on and off again before peering out the door back at Jane. He tried to be as normal and casual as possible, "Hey uh, so what are you reading there? Is it any good? " macxcheese“Oh really? That’s too bad,” she mumbled. She looked at him blankly for a second before remembering the book she was holding. “Ah, it’s “A Tale of Two Cities!” She held it up so he could see the title. “Yeah it’s great, but like super sad.” So sad that she cried every time she read the ending. CandyLeptic "Tale of Two Cities?? Oh my God?" He set the lighter down and made his way over, still careful to remain at a distance! Americans always minded that, he noticed! "I've- I'VE Read Tale of Two CIties!!! Have you finished it?? Oh my God. Marquis Evrémonde is like, the biggest...jerk...ever. BUT I really like Lucie! I wish Malina was more like her!" He laughed. macxcheeseJane raised her eyebrows and smiled. “You have?” She set the book in her lap and nodded at his remarks. “I know right. Lucie’s great. And Malina’s great too!” She argued, tossing a glance at the sleeping girl. “Sydney Carton is the /best/ though, and I will fight you about that,” she laughed. CandyLeptic He sat on the ground a little ways away and laughed too, "MAYBE, but I can't imagine Malina would ever get with a Sydney. Maybe! But not soon, hahahaha!! Of course I have, it's a classic! Three times actually! Once when I was 12, then again at 17 and then 22! I tried to get Malina to read it but she doesn't get along very well with books. Have you carried that around this entire time? macxcheese “For a while now,” she admitted. “I picked it up at grocery store with some… people.” She stroked the cover and looked up again. “If you ever want to re-read it again, I’d be happy to lend it to you!” CandyLeptic "Really? That's pretty cool. I couldn't though, not if you've held onto it this long, haha!" He was actually more worried something would happen to him and she wouldn't get her book back then he was at the thought of just something happening to him in the first place! "But thank you, Jane! I appreciate that. I have some books on me if you ever need reading material, I think it's probably the best way to... you know, keep your mind off things! Most of them are college textbooks though, so I'm afraid they aren't too interesting!" macxcheese '“Well, if you ever want to, the offer’s open!” she replied. She smiled at his offer but declined as well. “I’m not sure how much time I’ll have for reading! This I just skim nowadays.” She tapped on the book and awkwardly screwed up her mouth. Looking at the ceiling she said, “You know, if it’s too cold in your room, you could stay in here. It’s, uh, alright with me.” CandyLeptic "Oh thank Ghandi," he muttered and was off the floor in a second. He was back right away as a comforter burrito again, quite warm. "Northern states are so cold. India is really where it's at, I'll be honest..." He laid down next to Malina (they usually were stuck sharing a bed anyway!) before something occurred to him. "Hey Jane, where are you from? Around here?" macxcheese Jane shook her head "no" and said "California. So uh, I kind of understand that feeling about the cold," she laughed lamely. CandyLeptic "Oh Cali? That must have been fun. Did you...what's the word....surf off the beach? Is there surfing there?" he laughed and let out a yawn, "I don't even know, haha."
macxcheeseJane: “I didn’t really surf much, haha. I was more of a, um, sitter?” She shrugged. “Not a fan of water. Where did you guys come from?” CandyLeptic "Oh, no?" He said under another yawn. He sleepily blinked for a moment before replying, "Calcutt- er, Kolkata, in English, haha. It's very East in India." He closed his eyes for a second before muttering, "It's very nice. It's known for being a principle educational center, but I still ended up completing most of my schooling here. I moved when I was about 16, so, your age." He yawned again. macxcheeseJane tapped her chin. “I don’t think I’ve ever been there! Is it close to Bollywo-“ She blinked at him and blurted angrily, “I’m nineteen.” Realizing her mistake, she slapped a hand over her mouth. CandyLeptic Rashad sleepily laughed at Bollywood before opening his eyes and sitting up, "NINETEEN? YOU? What really? My God, you look young!! Here I thought you were much younger. It makes sense though, I can't think of too many 16 year olds so well spoken," He sighed and laid back down, "In the grand scheme of things anymore, age is so trivial." He then perked up, "Hey Jane!! How old do I look? I don't look like, shady, correct? Not too bad? I wouldn't scare children, right?" He did just shave... macxcheeseJane covered her face more and nodded. What a slip up! Rashad didn’t seem to think it was such a big deal though and she relaxed a bit. She took a moment to look at him before answering. “Uh, twenty-seven-ish?” she half guessed. “I don’t think you would scare children??” CandyLeptic "Oh really!?" He said, happily! "Right on the spot! 26, actually!" And here he was worried. Actually, he was only 25, but only for a little while more! He tried to count the days to his birthday but was too...tired.... "Well thanks Jane, I don't usually try," He lightly laughed, "I really thought about specializing in pediatrics but...I don't think I'll really get the chance..." he muttered, "I actually just finished my last year at medical school right before....you know." macxcheese“Oh, um, cool!” She really wasn’t sure what to say to that. So instead she focused on the second part of what Rashad said. “So you’re a doctor?” she asked. “You’d get along well with the leader of the last group I was in.”'' CandyLeptic "Probably not," He mumbled, actually pretty weakly. "I didn't get along very well with the leaders of our last group. Or...the one's before that..." He rubbed his eyes, "They um... they... they wanted me to take over for them actually, and... I didn't think they were serious but I uh...I don't want..." He paused for a moment, "More responsibility." He couldn't help but to look over to Malina for a second. macxcheeseJane finally caught all the yawns and rearranged the pile on her lap. “Well, I think I’m going to go to sleep, and it looks like you should too. Goodnight!” CandyLeptic Rashad was already half asleep at this point, but still managed a "Shoobh ratri!" macxcheeseJane’s fingertip felt cool against the glass, and she made a little smiley face through the condensation. It had really been snowing the last few days, and the windows were pretty fogged up. Next to the smiley face she drew a heart, and that’s when she saw /it/. She backed away from the glass and fell back on her bed. “Um, g-g-guys?” she whispered, her voice shaking. “Th-th-here’s something-g o-out t-t-there!” CandyLeptic Rashad looked up from a book he had been reading, and he gave Malina a single quick glance- She put out the fire at once, and had her gun in hand in a sec. Rashad stopped her, "How many Jane?" Malina shook him, "Grab your pistol." Rashad looked at her for a second before taking a pistol from his own bag. He put the bag on too, and Malina did the same. "Jane," He muttered and Malina quickly peered out Jane's window, "I don't think we'll be returning here," He was pretty calm, "You should probably pack up, kiddo!" macxcheeseJane rolled off the bed and scrambled over to her backpack, stuffing as much as she could in it. She ran back to her pillow and lifted it up, revealing her ax. She gripped the handle and tried to keep a steady hand, then remembered her pistol. She grabbed her jacket and threw it on, finding the small gun in one of its pockets. “Okay, okay, okay,” s he repeated to herself. When she was all ready she stared at the siblings, not sure what else to do. CandyLeptic "What do you see?" Malina, scoffed, "There's at least four." Rashad nodded. If they saw them from Jane's window then they could go through his room and out his door, and still be fairly ahead. "Jane, stay close to me. Malina, don't die." She gave him a thumbs up. "Jane, there's several trees in the forest. The snow is about 6 inches off the ground, giving us a good start. I don't think they can climb, and if they can, we have the better shot, provided we're higher. Understand?" He led the girls to his room (which was in shambles, pathetic.) And quickly and swiftly opened the door outside. It was cold and the wind attacked them, but they were on the opposite side of the zombies, and that meant they were ahead! Malina took off first, having trouble running in the snow but getting used to it! Rashad waited for Jane and then followed behind, revolver in hand! macxcheeseJane nodded wide-eyed at Rashad’s plan, then with a gulp followed Malina out the door. The snow dragged her feet back, but she could barely notice with all the adrenaline going through her. The wind whipped one of her braids into her face and she sputtered, then pushed on again. She was so caught up in running that she didn’t notice the trail of fr esh blood on the nearby snow.
