Skylar: "Cleaner than yours, probably. " she said with a grin. She didn't need any further encouragement from Conrad. She grabbed the pancake quickly and swung it around to the other side of the counter. It wasn't until she had sat down that she realized she was missing something.
"Um, can I have a fork please? And not to be greedy!! But if you have syrup that would be... Amazing."

"Kin'a busy." He grunted, looking at Lorna over his shoulder. "Hun, can't ya help de kids?" He asked sarcastically, going back to focusing on his pancakes as he flipped another one, waiting a moment before flipping it onto a plate he handed off to Conrad. "If dere ain't any syrup, I could see 'bout makin' sum caramel syrup. We've got sugar n' water."
He poured another pancake into the pan, shooting Lorna a wide smile as she begrudgingly got up from the table.
"Hope yer hungry."

Lorna yanked open the drawer with the silverware and pulled out a fork before she moved to a cabinet and got a new bottle of syrup and a bottle of chocolate syrup out from the back behind some food storage cans. She handed Skylar the fork and put the bottles of syrup on the counter, as well as pulling the sugar canister out from behind the flour canister.
"Do whatever your heart desires, dear." The last word was said with enough venom to make Conrad shiver. Lorna didn't even really mind that he had called her 'hun' in all honesty, it was tame compared to what he could be calling her, but if she hadn't made a retort then he would know that and that wasn't okay.
"And no. Not really hungry." She crossed the room to pick up her book and she vanished down the hallway without a word. Conrad watched her, a little confused, but not anywhere near brave enough to do anything about it. Also, she was probably fine. Just brooding. He snatched the second pancake and sat down next to Skylar, eyes widening when he saw the new bottle of chocolate syrup. Snatching it greedily, he doused his pancake in the concoction before even thinking about the fact that they didn't have anything other than powdered milk and water. When he did realize it, he didn't care.
"Holy shit," he breathed, mouth still full. "RICK. Did you sell your soul for the ability to make amazing pancakes, or what?"

Skylar: When the chocolate syrup was brought out she almost leapt over the counter. Instead she wound up having to wrestle it away from Conrad. She swirled it around, drizzling a spiral onto her pancake. She cut off a large bite with her fork and shoving it in her mouth, closing her eyes in bliss. She had a momentary thought that she had died in that van, because this was probably heaven.
Almost literally before she knew it, the pancake was gone. The taste lingered in her mouth, and she looked pleadingly over at Rick.

"'Scuse you, my soul was at least worth de ability ta make amazin' pancakes AND cookies AND cupcakes." He grinned obnoxiously widely, so very thrilled with their ecstatic reactions to his pancakes. At Skylar's pleading look, another was placed on her plate lickity-split.

"My bad," Conrad said, still working on his first pancake. He smothered it in more syrup as he watched Rick plop another pancake on Skylar's plate. How the heck was she eating that this quickly?
Lorna's brow furrowed as she continued to read a book in her room. In truth, while she barely felt 'hungry' anymore, she did feel when her stomach was empty and it had been for a while. She just couldn't shake how unsettled she'd been feeling around Rick lately. What an asshole. He just... Is this how he got his kicks? Subtly treating her like she was a joke? Whatever. She was focused on something else right now, comparing Rick's file to a book on infections and diseases. Other days she'd be able to tease him right back, but today she'd just had it. She supposed her lack of a sense of humor (at times) was something that just came with the apocalypse.

Skylar: She couldn't help but cheer as she quickly dug into the second pancake. Her stomach was beginning to assauge its violent demands for food, but she was definitely still hungry. Definitely. She was halfway through the next pancake (also covered in a healthy serving of chocolate syrup) before she spoke again.
"You are incredible," she said earnestly. "This is way better than anything my parents made! Maybe she had eaten better at some of the restaurants Dad had taken her to. Maybe. But it was hard to tell, as no food tasted better than food while you're starving. "Where did you learn to cook like this???"
She finished off the second pancake and looked at him again. Her eyes weren't so heartbreakingly desperate this time, but it was clear she was wondering if there would be more. Don't be greedy. she reminded herself. Don't be greedy don't be greedy don't be greedy don't be greedy oh my god that pancake is the size of texas don't be greedy don't be greedy.

Feeling his ego swell as they devoured his pancakes and Skylar lavished him in praise, Rick leaned back, his hands on the counter and his hips cocked.
"I know, I know, but please, go on." He grinned widely, eyes closed in delight. "Well..."
He debated what he should tell her. No one had really previously asked the how, when, where, and why of his cooking abilities - they were just happy he had them at all. And he has happy for one of the few skills he seemed to have that allowed him to demonstrate himself as more than an immune loudmouth.
"I was goin' ta culinary school, 'fore all dis..." He explained quietly, his insides immediately clenching as he revealed a bit about himself to her that she otherwise would've never been able to know. He had just MET this girl, was it absolutely necessary he start telling her all the nitty gritty? Why had he done that? Oh well... he hoped she would prove as trustworthy as the vibe she was giving off, but only time would tell.
"But de secret is dat I sold my soul fer it, remember?" He winked, referring to the joke with Conrad from moments earlier. He shook off the anxious feeling in his gut, turning back to the pan to serve up the final pancake. Before placing it on the table though, he quickly snatched the chocolate sauce from Skylar, turning his back to them. She gave off a pitiful whine behind him, but it quickly turned in a surprised mewl of glee when he turned around again, putting down his creation to reveal a cat face-shaped pancake, complete with chocolate eyes, nose, mouth, whiskers, and stripes. (Since she seemed to really like her chocolate. It only seemed right to put as much on as possible will preserving the details.)
"Dat's all da batter, fer now." He explained, standing back and leaving his mess on the counter. "Y'all can clean up?" Without waiting for an answer, he waved a hand over his shoulder and headed out the kitchen. He was curious what Lorna had gotten up to, she seemed pretty miffed for reasons that would otherwise be mysterious to him, if he didn't know how uppity she could be from his teasing.

"NO FAIR," Conrad exclaimed, looking down at the catcake. But she was the guest, and she could apparently eat a cow by herself. Plus he wasn't even all that hungry after that gargantuan pancake, he just-- THE CAT WAS SO CUTE.
Lorna frowned at her file as she sat on the bed, legs propped up and serving as her desk. Sure, she might be the go-to person for this infection, but normally when someone got an infection you just gave them copious amounts of antibiotics. And while some people were more prone to infection than others, no one was IMMUNE. Did Rick's blood have some sort of-- There were heavy footsteps outside her door. The door was ajar, so she figured no one would knock, but if that was Rick (and she was pretty sure it was) she didn't want to see him. Not that he cared.
"What," she said flatly. Why was she so mad at him for being who he ALWAYS was? Who cared. Not her for sure. Definitely not her. Her brow furrowed deeply. Okay, maybe she was a little mad, but if she told him to go away would he? Probably not. Besides, he didn't care if she was mad. That was their thing. Teasing each other and making fun of each other, and he had yet to stop. So why was he there, to make amends? Not likely. The day she heard 'sorry' come out of his mouth was the day she'd kiss the asshole full on the mouth- meaning it would never happen. He didn't issue apologies like that.

((OOC: Urk, I forgot Ellen hadn't posted yet. Feel free to do so, I'm sorry!)) Laughing with a shake of his head at Conrad's explanation, he made a mental note to make it up to him somehow. Maybe the next time food was involved, unless something else presented itself. Shoving his hands in his pockets, he tromped up the stairs and through the halls, not bothering to muffle his presence. If she didn't want him around, he'd at least let her know he was coming; Though if that meant he'd actually leave her alone if asked, he wasn't sure. He didn't exactly respond well to angry commands... He heard her how absolutely enthused greeting through the door, but he paused to rap his knuckles on the door frame regardless so the door wouldn't be jarred any more open. "May I come in?" He asked, putting immense focus into sounding as polite and proper english-accented as possible. He stood up straight for all of two seconds, before his shoulders slumped in bad posture again, hands still in his pockets.

((It's kind of branching off into two, so I hope it's cool if I get this reply out of the way really quick!)) Lorna: She couldn't help but sigh under her breath lightly, but immediately felt bad for being so... bitchy. Oh no, she really was a bitch, wasn't she? She always hated that word, but she had to admit she was kind of acting like the connotation applied to it. Obnoxious, controlling, rude... "Yeah," she said after a minute, trying to forget her anger. "What do you need?" Shit, it wasn't working. She was still mad.

Skylar: She squeed in delight at the kitty pancake poking softly at a spot that wouldn't ruin the design as she grinned widely. "Ooh, thank you thank you!" she said, before carefully cutting out a little triangle of it, popping it in her mouth and wiggling a little in happiness. When Conrad made his comment, however, she side-eyed him, feeling guilty. She carefully cut off one of the kitty's ears and scooped it over to his plate.
As she finished off the last few bites, she felt a wave of exhaustion washing over her. She remembered now that she hadn't gotten nearly enough sleep, and the adrenaline and excitement from meeting new people was wearing off now that she was comfortably full for the first time in months. She felt herself nodding off and, not wanting to faceplant into a chocolatey plate, directed herself sideways. Shouldn't there be a...? Ah, yes. She found Conrad's shoulder, barely thinking through the haze of sudden sleepiness, and rested against it, eyes sliding shut quickly. She was comfortable, she was happy, she was clean, and she was full. There was absolutely nothing else she could have wanted.

Conrad: "Oh! You didn't have to--... Thank you." He ate it thankfully. He had just been concentrating on mopping up the rest of the chocolate syrup on his plate with the piece of the catcake's ear he had left when he felt a weight on his shoulder and turned to see it was Skylar. After blinking a few times, and trying to fight off the rising blush that was creeping its way up his cheeks, he tensed up and watched her for a minute. Was she already asleep...? Wow. He sighed lightheartedly, though, remembering the feeling well. Conrad couldn't imagine what kind of world she must have crossed. His own was tame compared to many of the stories he'd heard.
Words eluded him for a minute, as did any form of action he could take to rectify the situation, until he figured out a way to stand. He moved the chair back carefully and kept his knees bent as he did, which jostled her a bit, but not enough to wake her from her slumber. Once he figured it out from there, he carefully held her head and picked her up to carry her up the stairs. She only stirred a couple times, making small sleepy noises as he tried to carry her with as few bumps as possible. She was heavy, but not anything he couldn't handle with a bit of difficulty. Sometimes Conrad was thankful he'd been kicked into gear in the army.
After making it to the top floor, he looked around for a moment to see Rick entering Lorna's room and mentally recalled who was sleeping where. There was an empty room at the end of the hall, he was pretty sure. There were a ton of books on shelves around the room, as well as a couch and a small desk in the corner, but there was a bed, so he figured this was as good a place as any. The next bit took some trickery as he laid her on the bed and carefully pulled the blanket and sheet out from under her, tossing them over her as she turned over. Startled, Conrad jumped back with his hands held out in a defensive stance until he realized she was still asleep and therefore couldn't be upset with him or anything similar. Relieved, he walked backwards out the door and latched it shut, closing it as softly as he could and pressing his back up against it before sliding down the door.
This is it, Conrad decided. Zombies aren't going to kill me, bullet wounds aren't going to kill me, heck, not even a sickness or bad injury is going to kill me. Pretty girls are going to kill me. This is how I die.
After giving himself a minute, he stood and made his way toward the stairs, hearing bits and pieces of Rick and Lorna speaking with each other as he did. In a wild attempt not to eavesdrop, he made his way to 'his' room and shut the door.

"I needa reason ta wanna talk ta ya?" He asked with a chuckle, shouldering his way quietly into her room. He pushed the door almost-closed again with his foot, leaning against the wall with his shoulder.
"Hi." He smiled lop-sidedly, briefly removing his hat to muss up his hair before immediately covering it up again. A nervous gesture. "You, uh... Ya don't like pancakes? I coulda made somethin' else..."

Lorna: She looked over at him with an odd expression. It was something between confusion and incredulity. Internally, she was fighting off the thought that he was being kind of caring. And nice. And dare she think even a little cute? That guy didn't have a cute bone in his body and there they were. She carefully turned her attention to her book, staring at the page rather than reading
"Pancakes are fine, really. And anything chocolate has my vote. I'm just not hungry," she lied. She knew she wasn't eating enough, that much was obvious. She just... had mouths to feed. And, frankly, it stressed her out. Lorna had done her best not to get emotionally attached, but she was long past that point. "Uh," she said after a minute, losing her natural military edge. "Thanks, though. For... for offering."
