Lorna honestly couldn't care less that she was sitting next to him on the porch swing, just as long as she got one of these cigarettes. She started her own and breathed in, long and deep to get it started before she blew out slowly and sighed. "I always forget that I have a headache until I have one of these," she said distantly, eyes focused on the clear sky through the porch railing. She crossed her legs and leaned back, savoring the much-sought-after cigarette.
Conrad, having sufficiently cleaned his face (three times. He had to clean it three times to get all the muck off of it), he wiped his face with a towel as he peeked around the corner. After shaking his head a bit to get the stray droplets off his hair, he said, "Getting cigarettes for Rick is a win-lose sitch."
He looked over at Skylar after saying this before Mr. Whiskers padded in the room, licking his chops contentedly. He somehow looked fatter. And a lot happier.
"That cat is going to die before he's three years old if we keep giving him excuses to gorge himself." He had to admit he looked cute, though as he rubbed up against Skylar's legs and weaved between them several times. "Looks like there's a new favorite in town," he commented.

Skylar: She laughed joyfully as Rick kissed her on the head, adjusting as he attacked Conrad next. She was about to shrug in answer to his question when Lorna came forward and offered her lighter. As they meandered away she dumped her bandages on the couch and walking carefully to the pantry to tuck away the cans, high stepping over the curious kitty. Once all the supplies were away she scooped him up, causing him to let off a surprised yowl.
"Did you miss me? Did you miss me?" she asked in her high cat voice. She nuzzled his fuzzy belly as he began purring again. She could feel the vibrations against her face and laughed. She flipped him on to the floor, shaking her head. "Never! He will never die! But it's true, he is the favorite," she said, completely missing the point. She grabbed one of the cans she had just put away, beans of course, but with chunks of pork in them at the very least. She pried it open with her knife, usually foregoing the old and rusted can opener. She dug out a spoon and began eating. She wandered away, eating. When she was done, she three-pointed it into the nearest trashcan.
She sighed, leaning against the nearest window. The sun was beginning to tinge the sky with color. She grinned widely and went down the highway, looking for the skylight she'd seen earlier. She found it and, standing on her tiptoes, opened it up. She hopped and grabbed the edges, wiggling and pulling herself up until she pulled herself up over the edge and made her way out, kicking her legs to get her way the rest of the way onto the roof. She scooted over and laid back on the slope of the roof, watching the sunset bloom into beautiful colors, royal reds and golds, gilding the clouds with rose pink. She smiled contendedly, the cool breeze skirting across her skin and humming a tune that only she could hear.

In his own curiosity, Conrad followed Skylar up the stairs on some seemingly secret mission. When she climbed her way up through the roof he just stared. Mr. Whiskers had followed them as well and meowed up at Conrad, as if to say Um?
"Well, there she went," he said down to the fluffball before kneeling to give him a quick chinrub before jumping up and following her to the roof.
"Is this seat taken?" he asked jokingly, pulling himself through the skylight with significantly less trouble than Skylar. He sat on the roof next to her for a second before laying down as well, looking at the sunset she'd apparently come up here to watch. "So," he said awkwardly, "Come here often?"

"Same." Rick sighed in agreement, after taking another breath of his own.
They sat in relative silence, part of Rick's thigh bouncing against Lorna's as he unconsciously sat a little too close and his leg twitched up and down to a quick, tuneless beat only he could hear.
He was distracting himself with trying to turn his exhales into french inhales, breathing out through his mouth and reinhaling it through his nose. He wasn't entirely successful, but it was better than sitting there just thinking. Maybe if he had nice things to think about besides, 'Ah fuck me, it's de goddamn apocalypse n I'm suppose'ly da only motherfucker dat can be bit by dese things n live, because somethin' decided makin' da biggest asshole de only guaranteed survivor was funny.'
"What's yer fave colour?" Rick shot out randomly, stopping the bouncing of his legs to lean forward and look at Lorna with one elbow on his knee, propping his chin towards her.

Lorna: "Green," she said instantly. After a small pause though, she added, "But purple's good too." Saved it. She didn't want him to think... well.
"What about yours?" she asked. Small talk in an apocalyptic setting. Incredible. "And while you're at it, what about favorite movies?" She couldn't believe she was encouraging this. Something about it was relaxing though, she had to admit, like none of... it... had ever happened. The tension in her shoulders became apparent as she started to relax.

Skylar: She smiled over at him in pleasant surprise. She hadn't expected anyone to follow her! She laughed at his corniness and admitted,
"Actually, yeah. I only noticed the skylight yesterday, though. I'm an idiot." She hummed contently, watching as the sky was painted with vibrant reds, oranges, and purples, the clouds floating delicacies of rose pink. She left a pause, humming to herself again before saying, "Sunsets have always been my favorite time of day. And maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just because everything else is so awful but... I could swear they've gotten more beautiful."
She shook her head at herself a little. That was pretty cheesy, even for her, but it really was true.

Conrad couldn't help but smile. There was truth to her words, definitely. The stars were easier to see now too, and he couldn't even express how much he wished he could actually go out at night to see them. It was really impractical, though. He smiled more widely when he thought about how much more she was opening up now. Trust was a heavy thing to want in this setting, and he could acknowledge that, so he was glad she trusted him at least enough to admit something so corny.
"I thought I was the cheesehead," he said, nudging Skylar softly with his arm. "But, for real though, there's definitely some truth to that."

"Blue, but green n purple'sa awesome combo." He grinned at her, raising his chin momentarily to free his hands to do finger guns. He considered her next question while smoking some more of his cigarette. Another benefit of small talk - it prevented him from sucking back an entire carton of cigarette instantly like some nicotine vacuum.
"Ya ever saw 12 Angry Men? Bought a bunch a assholes stuck on jury duty together, arguing fer da defense a sum young punk-ass." He gestured vaguely, as though if she didn't know what he was talking about he'd somehow be able to conjure up the images with his hands. "And don't ya tell anyone, but I always loved The Wizard of Oz."

Lorna rolled her eyes as she took another drag, deliberately blowing it in his face.
"Those are old as balls," she remarked. "So old... Those are older than us." Shaking her head, she tried to narrow down her list of favorite movies. "Inception was a crazy good movie. Same with The Day After Tomorrow. But for the crazy old movies, maybe The Breakfast Club." She nodded, content with her answers. But now she was at a loss for small talk. She had a crap taste in music and would not be the one to bring it up, and she didn't take Rick for much of a reader.
"Can you believe theaters were still open a year ago? The last movie to come out was that one movie-- Madagascar 6 or whatever number they were at. Those kids movies. Never saw them."

Skylar: She grinned back at him, glad someone else agreed with her.
"Nah, you're not a cheesehead," she said with certainly. "You're a cheeseball!"
She shifted, propping herself on her elbow so she could look at him. "Did you like, watch sunsets before?" Wow what a dumb question. She hoped that he would understand what she was asking.

Conrad: "Yeah, sometimes." He looked over at her, deciding not to move much from his position. "It was a good way to get out of the house, anyway. Can't say I ever did it on the roof, though," he teased.

Skylar: "Aw, man, but the roof is the best seat though!" she said enthusiastically. It was clearly true, as the view of the now fading sunset was unobscured by anything but especially tall treetops. "Of course it's best if there aren't any trees around, or if you live in an apartment building." she spoke with experience. She sighed and lay back again, watching the last tendrils of fire turn the sky a dull dusty purple as they faded below the horizon.
"I guess we should go back inside," she said, huffing a little. The only bad thing about sunsets was that they didn't last long enough. But she knew that the next day there would be another one, different but just as gorgeous, maybe even more so. She hoisted herself up onto her hands, wiggling her leg that had fallen a little asleep while she had been laying there.

Conrad nodded before quickly looking away, having been much more interested in watching Skylar watch the sunset than watching the sunset himself.
"Yeah, probably." He glanced around in all directions before listening closely to hear Rick and Lorna talking under the porch. He smiled widely before placing a finger on his lips in a 'shhh' gesture before he hopped up to the top of the roof expertly and edged his way down toward the direction of their voices. Before long he was balanced on top of the porch. He pointed down at them through the roof and looked over at Skylar before shrugging as if to say 'should I jump down and scare the crap out of them?'

Skylar: It took her a moment to see what he was up to. When she saw them, however, she immediately got an idea and had to clamp her hands over her mouth to avoid laughing. She motioned him back frantically while also motioning for him to be quiet. She looked around the roof, scooping up some twigs and tree debris that had blown onto the roof over many months of storms. She edged her way to the edge of the roof proper, peering over to the porch roof.
Once she had her target in sight, she tossed her first missile over the edge, sinking it between the slots. It only grazed its target, but she hit them! She scrambled back as quietly as possible, out of sight from her victims.

"Can you believe theaters were still open a year ago? The last movie to come out was that one movie-- Madagascar 6 or whatever number they were at. Those kids movies. Never saw them." Scrunching up his nose in disgust at her blowing smoke into his face, his smile gave him away as his eyes closed and wrinkled at the corners. Waving a hand in front of his face to clear away the smoke, he took a long drag of his cigarette and held it in his mouth, threatening to blow it right back in her face. However, just as Lorna braced for him to do it, he blew it out the side of his mouth instead, completely away from her. He raised his eyebrows up and down a few times with a cheeky grin, before turning away to take a calmer smoke of the remaining cigarette. "Mmm, yeah, dos were good." He agreed, thinking of them. Man, he could actually really go for a viewing of The Breakfest Club right now. He was almost tempted to stand up and imitate the dance scene - almost. "I never saw it neither." He sighed, finding it hard to believe how much had already changed. He lost track of time quickly as things spiralled out of control. And his thoughts were going down a similar path as he thought about it, his face darkening as his chin lowered till he was staring at his feet. His leg started bouncing again, and he tapped the ashes off his cigarette before finishing it off. However, before he could flick it away, he suddenly felt something bounce off his shoulder and he looked around in surprise. At Lorna's confused expression, he quietly whispered something had hit him. She pointed out a twig a few feet away, before shrugging. "Damn trees." Rick grumbled, rubbing his shoulder as though it hadn't barely glanced off of him. "Kiss it better?"
