Sunlight was filtering through the spaces in between the boards on the window, highlighting lazily dancing dust particles as they wafted through the air. While the sight might have been comforting in its domesticity, Rick grumbled, as he was in the unfortunate position of having one of these beams of light shine directly on top of his resting eyelids. He scrunched up his face, nuzzling forward until the light was blocked out and he could feel feathery strands of hair tickling his face.
"Mornin'." He mumbled, lips grazing against warm skin. He was still not entirely awake yet and was not wanting to be. "What do ya want fer breakfest?"
He opened the eye that wasn't squished against the side of a pillow to see red, lots and lots of red. He pulled back a little, startled, his mind immediately assuming blood, before the texture of it against his chin reminded him that, no, this was hair, not blood. One of his arms was asleep, having found its way under Lorna at some point during the night, and both of them were wrapped around protectively, hands against her back.
Granted, she had given him permission to share the bed with her. But he was pretty sure she wouldn't be too happy to wake up in this position. He tried to roll away, or at least pull out his one arm, but any excessive movement had Lorna sleepily growling at him. It didn't help he had already spoken to her, and she was registering things as well as she began to drift awake.

It took her a few minutes, but Lorna did wake up. Her eye flitted open and she found she had moved closer to Rick than she had realized when she saw familiar tattoos. She blinked a few times, registering the night and day they'd had and she tried to roll backwards and away. Lucky for her ,Rick realized she would have landed on the floor had she gone any further and also would've probably hit her head on the nightstand, and he held onto her so she wouldn't do that. He did release her after she stopped squirming. Face on fire, she sat up and turned away from him to look at the window. Sleeping position aside, how had she managed to sleep so late? It looked to be past seven in the morning already, and she woke before six a vast majority of the time. Granted, it wasn't odd for Rick to wake up around now, but her...
"We're wasting daylight," she said, sounding more surprised than angry. Now that she had spoken she realized that Rick had said something earlier.
"Did you say something?" she asked, trying to will the pink tinge on her cheeks to go away. Stupid lumberjack build and stupid body heat. Stupid. STUPID.

"Nothin' important!" Rick remarked with a slightly embarrassed look on his face. He was handling this way better than Lorna, which made him feel a little better, even if his cheeks were also pink as he pulled his discarded clothing from the night before back on.
He stood up, stretching and rolling his neck, "We should get goin', if we can, yeah?"

Lorna nodded, looking away from him as she gathered up her extra layers of clothing. She set them on the bed and had begun pulling on her jean shorts when she started walking over to the window to look down at the yard.
It was thoroughly torn apart, mostly, she was sure, by undead stragglers walking through things rather than around, and what shreds of normalcy that had been there before (a mailbox, lawn ornaments) were knocked over and dragged from their original setting. There were a few stragglers still who had gotten themselves stuck on things, but overall it looked like something they could handle.
She turned away from the boarded window as she did the button and zipper on her jean shorts and found her overshirt and belt. "We should be okay to leave," she explained through the cotton of her shirt. She pulled it over and found her vest and gun holsters. "A few stragglers, but nothing like before." Lorna was already calculating drive times and hoping that no one was too worried about them. While mentally going through her list of layers, she realized that they had definitely not eaten enough yesterday and thought longingly of the food in the car. At least they could get to it now.
After lacing up her boots and replacing her glocks, she was glad to have all her layers back. It was like a security blanket, almost. Glancing over at Rick, she pulled her hair back in its normal bun, sans the unruliness that usually came later, and nodded. "Ready?" she asked, grabbing a hold of the bookshelf that had served as an excellent barricade through the night and glancing through the books to find the one she'd remembered during her nightmare.

Rick awkwardly stood on his side of the bed, taking much less time to get dressed and having nothing else to do to busy himself with. Normally, he probably would've watched Lorna get dressed, because he was anything if not the exact opposite of a gentleman. But at that moment in time, he felt he had taken enough liberties with the red head's personal space. So, instead, he busied himself with tracing some of the star tattoos on his arm, using the opposite hand to do it.
He was at about his elbow when Lorna was fully dressed and ready to go, and he lifted his head to the bookshelf. The two of them moved it without much effort, and Rick watched curiously as Lorna snatched a single book off the shelf. Figuring it was important and not one to question Lorna's decisions in the first place, Rick moved past her to open the door cautiously. Just enough of a crack to peek out of, just in case.
There was no sign of walkers outside the door, even when he opened it far enough to stick his head out of and check up and down the hall.
"Looks clear." He said into the hallway, letting his voice carry should it draw any hidden attention which should then reveal itself to his crossbow. When there was no such movement, he opened the door the rest of the way, letting himself and Lorna out.
Rick kept his crossbow handy, but was much more relaxed than he had been until now. Even if it had taken them a while to get there, the night's sleep had proven well, and Rick stifled a lazy yawn with the back of one hand as they did a quick sweep at the bottom of the stairs again.
"We good?"

Lorna nodded. She had honestly figured the doors and windows would hold up even without the bookcase- she was being extra cautious by suggesting they move it in front of the door. That was her. Extra cautious about anyone's safety other than her own.
She was in a more pleasant mood by the time they had finished the sweep downstairs, and had even managed to find a hammer in a stray door on their last look for food. This was good because it meant they could use the door rather than risk their necks by crawling out the upstairs window again. While she had every confidence Rick could have kicked open the door from the outside, it was harder when the door needed to open in.
After a few moments and a pile of nails, she peered through the window of the door. She did her best not to stand on her toes to do it, but she was barely too short so she had to.
"There's one on the deck and maybe four in the yard," she reported. "I can't see around the house though, so there could maybe be more out there." She tucked the book on clean energy under her arm , hand on the doorknob. "I'd rather not use my gun if I don't have to. Think you could get them from the porch?" She knew he could- his aim was much better than you'd expect from someone who chose to use bats to bash zombie skulls in.

"Oh, yeah~ " He grinned devilishly, lifting his crossbow as Lorna opened the door.
Marching outside as if he owned the place, he made short work of the zombie on the porch. It had an arrow through the side of its head before it could even turn it, its body crumpling like paper. Though this caught the attention of the other ones, Rick didn't even seem to care, firing off arrows rapidly as though it was nothing. With all the ones Lorna had accounted for taken care of, Rick checked his sides, spotting nothing.
Despite her blind spot, Lorna crept out, too. She started gathering up Rick's arrows for him, when it became apparent if there were any zombies around, they were too far away to be posing any threat. She handed off the small batch of arrows to him, which he took like he was being awarded a trophy, and planted a kiss on her cheek before she could say anything.
"Uh, yeah, I'm awesome." He said, more to himself than to her, as he strode towards the car they had stashed the previous day.
It was a little worse for wear, looking like some of the walkers might have stumbled into it, but nothing major. He waited by her door, waiting until she was close enough to open it for her.
"After you~ " He purred, letting her take the driver's seat as he wound his way over to the passenger side.

Lorna accepted all of this, at least at first. Once they were in the car, though, she switched CD's to one of her favorite bands instead of Elvis and elbowed him on purpose while she did it. It wasn't hard, in fact, she knew it barely counted as punishment.
"That was for kissing me, by the way," she said very casually as Jack's Mannequin echoed through the car. Once they were on the road, she realized her mistake belatedly when she started singing quietly.
"Two to one, static to the sound of you and I, Undone for the last time. And there this was, Hiding at the bottom of your swimming pool Some September. And don't you think I wish that I could stay?
Your lips give you away I can hear it- a jet engine in the center of the storm And I'm thinking I'd prefer not to be rescued..."
She never could resist Jack's Mannequin- much less this song in particular. She felt like this was some sort of sick victory for Rick in the end anyway. God damn it, Rick.

Was this supposed to be a punishment? Rick stayed silent, but put on an absolute show beside Lorna as she drove, as if he was the world's best mime. He held a hand over his heart, pouting and batting his eyelashes at her, as if to say 'How could you?' to her changing the CD.
"I'd do it again." He waited to speak until it was the pause between songs, not wanting to miss out on any of Lorna's singing. "Just so you know."

Lorna's face grew to be that same shade of red as it had been previously, but she kept her eye on the road. She tried to come up with a retort- anything to put him back on his level. 'Yeah well, don't,' came to mind. As did the more eloquent 'Why don't you fuckin' try?' and 'I'd like to see you try that with my foot up your ass,' but nothing felt right. Her heart wasn't in it because, frankly, it had been... kind of nice.
NO. Nope. Nooooo way don't do THAT. NOOOOOOOOPE. Don't ENJOY his stupid flirting, he clearly just has a thing for your HIPS. Your STUPID, HUGE, INCONVENIENT HIPS. Finally, after several minutes and the moment had long passed (as had another song), she felt like she could maybe say something that didn't hold her to a commitment to any feelings good or bad.
"Maybe someday I'll let you," she said simply, gripping the wheel hard. Was that good enough? Wait, that might have sounded like he had hope. Did he have hope? Did she see this going somewhere? She started trying to think of the future but all she could think of was the long, hard road to finding a cure. She frowned. "Maybe."

Rick grinned triumphantly, leaning back in his seat and putting both of his hands behind his head. 'Maybe'? He could live with maybe. Maybe wasn't a no. It was far from being a yes, but a no it was not. Pulling his hat down over his eyes, partially trying to hide the giant smirk gracing his lips, he settled comfortably.
"Yeah, maybe."

Lorna rolled her eye. What a freaking loser.
"Maybe," she agreed. The word of the day.
"If you want Elvis we can put it in," she said finally. "I'm sure Brad had like five other CDs of the guy in that thing."

There were very - and Rick really meant it when he emphasized very - few things in life that could get him to turn down something he loved. Especially something he loved as much as Elvis, and the ability to sing along with his songs on the long drive awaiting them on the way home.
But at the mention of Brad, all Rick could think about was the memory of that rotting corpse laying on the floor, what constituted as its blood slowly pooling around it from the arrow he had personally made sure to put in its skull. And Lorna, falling to her knees beside it, and losing control of herself at the sight of it. It wasn't a pleasant memory to associate with some of his favourite pieces of music.
"Nah, let's keep listenin' ta dis." He nodded his head towards the CD player, before peeking at Lorna. "Ya like it, right?"
Better to make new memories, with new music, instead.

Lorna had never really lumped things together like Rick was doing, so she wouldn't understand it if she'd known. Something told her that it was something like that, though. She nodded after glancing over at him. Brad wasn't what was upsetting her, really- it almost felt better. Even though she'd failed to take care of it once, at least someone had in the end. Had she been forced to pick another person to do it, she might have picked Rick. Maybe. They drove in relative silence, and Lorna was grateful that the back roads they were taking were relatively clear. Jack's Mannequin continued to pump out of the speakers, and as time passed, Lorna's singing grew a little more confident. "We stood like statues at the gate Vacation's come and gone too late There's so much sun where I'm from I had to give it away, had to give you away
And we spent four days on an Island at your family's old hotel Sometimes perfection can be It can be perfect hell, perfect..." ===->
